This position requires someone who is able to stand up and be counted. You will not sit back and provide problems but come up with realtime resolutions to both critical incidents and ongoing problems. Be prepared to be put under pressure in this role as downtime is not an option.....you have been warned!
The Right Candidate
This role is going to suit someone who not only thinks outside the box when it comes to problem solving, but who forgets the box ever existed. You will need to come up with innovative ways to solve issues and stop them from coming back. You will need to be available to put out fires and then come up with ways to stop them starting in the first place. You should be the one asking the questions and coming up with the answers but not be afraid to escalate if and when necessary.
On top of this you should always have an exceptional level of customer service, the customer may not always be right but you have to tell them that with a smile on your face and a resolution in your pocket. 99% up time should not be acceptable and you will always be driving for ways to improve.
Whilst a certification in ITIL Service Management is a nice to have it is not essential. If you can demonstrate previous behaviours in problem solving and being the go-to man for issues that is what will get you this role.
Ideally you will come from a strong technical background, growing through the ranks of IT from Service Desk through Desktop Support and then possibly System or Network Admin or straight into Service Management. Now you have ability to look across the entire technology stack and fingerpoint where the problem lies. You will still be asked 1st level support questions from time to time but you will also be asked to save the company during a Simpsons like nuclear meltdown, and you will handle both of these in a cool, calm and collected manner.
